the woman who was sentenced to be raped by an Afghan court married this past weekend. The interesting thing about this marriage is she became a second wife, meaning her husband already had one wife before he married her.
On Facebook at at least 15,000 members have organized to protest the marriage of anything except one man to one woman. Fair enough. The built in assumption of this is this standard only affects gays and lesbians, but this is of course, simply not true. Cultures within and outside of the United States and Russia have marriage that does not fall within this definition, even though the human beings getting married are men an women.
There is a decidedly Christian bent to all of this, no surprise there. But on examining one of the larger Facebook groups, two of the three organizers are from Russia, well outside the bounds of the United States. The idea that these groups are only organizing to protect the sanctity of one man and one woman marriage within the borders of the United States, specifically California (birthplace of the no smoking restaurant – think about it) does not carry a lot of weight.
Further, none of these sites that I have examined on Facebook make an exception for polygamist marriage in cases of rape. Most Christians will tolerate an abortion in cases of rape and incest, with the exception of Catholic priests, who are a bunch of fuck-wads by any standard.
In fact, the Facebook sites that I have looked at make no mention of the existence of polygamist marriage which is legal in many countries and cultures. By promoting a one world standard for all peoples, under the guise of traditional marriage, even though they must be aware that in traditional Jewish marriage polygamy was traditional marriage, Christians are once again trying to promote an anti-Islam holy war under the guise of a narrow-focused damning of gay men and women.
I am reminded of one of the only jokes I know, primarily not because of its joyously offensive punch-line, but because it exactly defines how the religious mind-set operates.
I will modify the joke for my more enlightened readers, but you will get the idea.
An enlightened American from one of our great conservative Christian, but warmer in climate states was driving his imported SUV during the gas crisis, through a recently turned, progressive, and integrated neighborhood when he sees a minister, or a Catholic Priest – if you prefer(as I do), lugging a heavy suitcase. The traditional American constitutionalist decides to come to the holy man’s rescue.
The gentleman stops and picks up the minister/Catholic Priest and they drive off down the world.
Driving down the world, the American sees a Muslim and a homosexual and decides it is his American duty to let these misguided souls get their inner American yah-ya spirit out, by running their ass down, least marriage be destroyed. Alas, he cannot, because after all, he has a minister/catholic priest in his foreign-made global-warming device powered from the fuel of his enemies.
So he fakes a heart-attack, closes his eyes, and swerves into the two fellow travelers. He hears a thud.
Driving on down the world, he opens his eyes and as cries, “father, did I hit those poor people?
“No you missed,” replies the minister/catholic priest,” but I got the person of color with my suitcase.”
It is neither unkind nor inappropriate to point out that Christians are using the issue of gay marriage in California as an excuse to justify overturning a muslim marriage in Afghanistan. This is after all, God’s law we are talking about. Not something that Jesuit Attorney General, Jerry Brown came up with.
And as we have already established Christians are more forgiving of rape in general, then they are of Muslim marriage practice. Or that Facebook encourages religious extremists and hate-based groups to use their services to advance their agenda.
It is further interesting to note, that a Facebook link on one of these groups about one man plus one woman equals marriage takes you to the moral majority front page.
The racism comes in when considering all Abrahamic religions support the idea of special creation. Special creation means that according to the bible torrah, koran, and so on that human beings are all created separate but equal, so to speak, and are not products of evolution – meaning Adam and Eve look like me and not you, therefore, the lesser races need to be brought into line by way of the bible. Tolerance of polygomist is just another example of the poor inferiors not knowing go only wants one man and one woman, meaning a Christian marriage.
Yes, it doesn’t make any rational or logical sense, I understand that, but something counter-intuitive is a pre-requisite of all religions and more or less the point, so I’ll stand by my claim that facebook does indeed encourage racism by allowing religious groups to flourish on their site.
It is easy enough to ask, however, why it is okay to define marriage as between one man and one woman in California, no exceptions, because of god and stuff, and yet tolerate a rape-inspired polygamist marriage in Afghanistan.
There aren’t too many Polygamist marriage for rape victim exception groups on facebook and poke it a bit and it is easy to see why.
