New Menu bar

by Gavin Impett
March 5th, 2011

I just noticed a menu bar above my site for the first time. How exciting. To let you know a bit more about what is going on, I have made a few executive decisions about moving forward with the martial arts thing. I am taping now, and my turnaround was a bit slow this week, due to a very busy schedule, but I’m not entirely comfortable about putting them up on Youtube, so it looks like I am going to create even more busy work for myself.

I’ve also decided to change this theme. Sooner or late I will hit on something that I like….Speaking of which, one of the downsides of going back to teaching is I tend to emphasize safety and control, so sometimes when you mean to haul off and hit someone, it comes out as a very quick flick with no real damage. Good for some situations, and in some,  fight ender to be sure, but not exactly what I had in mind. Not saying anything, but the thought did occur, come back here, let me try that one again.

Left-handed Eskrima

by Gavin Impett
December 9th, 2010

A funny thing happened last night, the universe did not implode in on itself when I went about the business of teaching the basic roll on the right and the left side.

The trick, isn’t it seems to get them to switch over before they learn it is not allowed, but before they learn how. Everything new is so confusing and frustrating that it really doesn’t matter what side they are on. For all the years of histrionics, frustration and general bullshit I went through over this, it boggled my mind I could get the basics down on both left and right in about 2 hours. Read More→

day two

by Gavin Impett
November 14th, 2010

Well,

it’s a bit late and I’m a bit tired. Cleaned the house, helped with dinner, went out and taught 9 people, which is weird but fun and rewarding. If this thing gets much bigger, I’m not sure how I will handle it, but it is what it is.

I am also planning on moving to the horseshoe courts, it’s a bit further up and more isolated.

Anyway, I am a bit out of it in addition to being a bit tired, assume alcohol is involved. Fifteen words more to get to one hundred. The rank narrows.

Traipsing around Mollie Stone today was fun as far as food searching was concerned. other than that a wreak of a day.

convergence collision course

by Gavin Impett
May 18th, 2010

One of the things that has been on the mind of late is the coming together of my various interests under one roof, namely here. I’ve been encouraging people to look up various other people I have trained under over the years and have also made it somewhat difficult for people to find me.

Lately, I’ve been writing a martial arts news letter for my fledgling JKD group, which more and more folks are actually reading. The problem with that is from my perspective, I on occasion tend to rub elbows with the Warriors for Christ crowd and given some of my other writing, it is easy to see from my end at least, how what I really think may not be all that welcome when rubbing elbows, so to speak.

I also noticed that writing on this site on a daily basis had a rather dramatic uptake in the people showing up, far more hits than humans known to me. This is basically a good thing given it is the intention of my writers intent to have folks read my words of wit and wisdom.

It is one of the things I do think about, quite a bit, probably too much to the point of inactivity. Generally, I’m finding myself becoming a bit too cautious and much to self-censuring, never a good thing.

I know I’m not the only one dealing with this, and I am suddenly reminded of the importance of being Ernest, where much of the plot surround a public and private face which do not always match up.

My dance teacher was curious about the sort of thing that I do and took a gentle run at me. “You’re dangerous,” she concluded.

I have a certain comfort level in environments where everyone has the known ability to kill everyone else in the room and I realize not everyone else has that experience or comfort level.

Anyway, I’ve been shoe shopping lately and I am discovering that finding a new martial arts/dance shoe is easier said than done.

I’ve also been busy editing a short movie, which radically cut back on my ability to do my own creative stuff. So it goes.

I have made the decision to move the site over to Dreamhost, since they have a better delivery system for video than this one.

Weirdly, it’s been two years since I started the Kitty video project, which is where the videos are going to end up.  Not much work on that one lately, obviously.
